Apartment Moves

Expert apartment movers who know San Francisco's buildings inside and out

About This Service

Moving Forward specializes in apartment moves throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area. We've handled everything from studio walk-ups in the Mission to luxury high-rises in SoMa, and we know exactly what it takes to navigate narrow hallways, tight stairwells, and strict building requirements.

Why Apartment Moves Are Different

Moving an apartment in San Francisco isn't like moving a house. You're dealing with building management, elevator reservations, narrow Victorian hallways, or five-story walk-ups. You might need insurance certificates, parking permits, and specific move-in windows. Some buildings require padded floor protection. Others have freight elevators that only operate during certain hours.

Moving Forward has been handling these details since 2012. Luis Aviles started this company after working for larger moving companies and seeing how often the building coordination piece got dropped. We know which buildings are strict about their rules and which ones are more flexible. We know that pre-1906 Victorians have narrower doorways, and that newer SoMa high-rises often require 48-hour notice for elevator reservations.

We Know Bay Area Buildings

Over the years, we've moved thousands of apartments across San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and the Peninsula. We've worked in the massive complexes at Parkmerced, the converted lofts south of Market, the classic buildings along Russian Hill, and the newer developments in Mission Bay. Each type of building has its quirks, and we've learned them all.

When you call us for an estimate, we'll ask specific questions about your building because the details matter. Third floor walk-up in the Sunset? We'll plan for that. High-rise downtown with a service elevator? We'll coordinate the reservation. Garden-style complex in Daly City with a long walk from the parking lot? We'll factor that into our timing and crew size. The goal is no surprises on move day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide certificates of insurance for my building?
Yes, absolutely. Most San Francisco apartment buildings and HOAs require a certificate of insurance, and we provide these at no extra charge. Just let us know your building management's email, and we'll send it directly to them, usually within 24 hours.
What if my building doesn't have elevator access?
We move apartments with stairs all the time. It's San Francisco, after all! Stair moves do take longer and require more labor, so they cost a bit more than elevator moves. We'll give you an honest quote upfront based on the number of flights and the volume of items.
Can you handle parking permits and elevator reservations?
We'll coordinate directly with your building management to reserve elevators and loading zones. For city parking permits, we can guide you through the process, but the permit needs to be in the resident's name. We know the requirements for most San Francisco neighborhoods and can help make it painless.
How long does a typical apartment move take?
A studio or one-bedroom usually takes 3-5 hours. A two-bedroom runs 4-7 hours, and a three-bedroom can take 6-9 hours. The exact time depends on how much stuff you have, building access, and the distance between locations. We'll give you a time estimate when we quote your move.
What about moving during busy season (end of month)?
The last few days of each month are crazy busy in San Francisco since most leases turn over then. We recommend booking at least 2-3 weeks in advance for end-of-month moves. Mid-month moves are usually easier to schedule with just a week's notice.
Do you move items that won't fit in the elevator?
Yes. We've moved couches down spiral staircases and maneuvered king mattresses around corners that seemed impossible. Sometimes we need to hoist items from balconies or temporarily remove a door. We'll figure it out. That said, if you're buying new furniture, measure your building's elevator first. We've seen some pieces that truly won't fit.
